My teaching philosophy...
It's not the subjects that matter...it's all about teaching the CHILD.

During my senior year at the University of Mary, my professor, Ms. Miller, chose to open class with a video reflection. The title of the video: A Heart of a teacher. As I sat watching and reading the words that came on the screen, I couldn't help but realize these are things I want for my future children, my future students. Below, you will find the video. If you have time, I encourage you to view it - I am sure you won't regret it. I took the time to watch it a second, and a third time - each time I was able to pick out something else that touched my heart - something that I wished to achieve in my future classroom. Listed below are some of the phrases that I identified with.
|
The passion to want every child to succeed to the best of his/her ability.
Each child is a work in progress. Model and teaches good character and RESPECT for one another. Learn to become responsible. Child arrives like a mystery box. Create a space where the child can feel safe. Choices. Child discovers the joy that comes from learning. Help the child see the potential for greatness within. Kindness is always a rule. When he's valued and loved and believes in himself and have a sense of pride. Taught to be strong and think for himself. Enable the child to become more than he could ever imagine. |
A few more thoughts...
I want to be in a classroom that brings me peace as I walk into it and when I leave. A peace that follows not because it was the perfect day and everything went perfect, but because I know that I worked hard with the children who came to me. That tomorrow will start again, and it will give another opportunity for making an impact in another person's life. Patience, a beautiful virtue. Patience is an important quality to have because regardless of how much you want something to go perfectly, it won’t. I might go into the classroom with a plan – but that doesn’t mean my plan will go perfectly. Patience comes into play during these times because in these moments it is important to take a deep breath and make a new plan. Listening to the child in these moments is crucial. Letting the child lead me, gives me the opportunity to meet them where they are going to learn best. I want to be able to meet the child where they are at. I want to be able to challenge the student where they are able to grow in their learning and not feel as if I am helping them with every step. Lastly, I truly believe that the children that I will someday get to interact with will have a huge impact on my life and I know they will often teach me a lot about myself and the world around me. They aren’t the only ones learning, I will be learning from them as well.
